Southern Hawker Aeshna cyanea194 viewstaken into the sun from distance using my 500mm lens which resulted in quite unusual colours. Now ID'd as a Southern Hawker becuase: - the size of its antehumeral stripes, the lack of yellow along the costa eliminates Common Hawker, the stripes on the 9th and 10th abdomen segments (rather than spots), & the small size of the anal clasper rules out Migrant Hawker.Nov 10, 2008

hawker_2408b.jpg
Migrant Hawker200 viewsphotographed from Public Hide @ Leighton Moss RSPB reserve, likely to be a Migrant Hawker because of it's characteristically stopping mid air & hovering for a few seconds every so often - a good time to try & focus on them & get a shot.Nov 10, 2008
hawker_2408c.jpg
Migrant Hawker Aeshna mixta201 viewsPublic Hide @ Leighton Moss RSPB reserve is a terrific place to try & get shots of Dragonflies in flight as they patrol up & down right in front of the hide, it probably takes 50 shots to get one decent one, but can be worth the effort.Nov 10, 2008
